Description
SN. 4686. Cal. .38-55. Made with 28-1/4" brl. Face of the action is marked 52. Case colored non-engraved action. Fitted with double set triggers and nickel plated Pope three finger lever. Buttstock is a typical Stevens Pope Model style with lovely fine checkering and made of nicely figured American Walnut. Buttplate is in the Pope model style and nickel plated. Forearm is of the two screw style, beautifully checkered with a fine checkering pattern, and has an add-on custom palm rest. Un-serial numbered brl is full octagon, No. 4 weight. There are two holes drilled and tapped on the underside of the forearm, most likely for a Pope machine rest. Under the forearm is marked with Pope brl number, 446, partially obliterated by a screw, and the Pope code 25/1.41. Brl is an odd length and may have been shortened. There is a blank filler where the front sight would go, and a Stevens-Vernier tang sight. Scope is a Winchester B5 with an unusual aperture on post reticle. Also included is the original brl serial numbered to action caliber .22 short, full octagon No. 3 weight with forearm marked 537 on bottom. Brl is fitted with scope blocks with two sets of holes drilled for front sight block. Front sight dovetail with blank. Fine bore with good rifling.
Condition
Traces of case color remaining on the action. Lever has patches of nickel missing. Buttstock has almost all of the original finish with minor handling marks. Buttplate nickel is flaking off in very small patches. Forearm shows only the most minor handling marks. Majority of brl blue remaining with losses at the sharp edges of the octagon. Mechanically good, bore very fine sharp throughout. Extra brl retains 80% blue. Forend with holes for palm rest has most of its original finish. Scope optics are good. C&R.
